Mrs. Apland died Jan. 24 at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center. The body was cremated and burial will be at a later date.
A memorial was established to the South Dakota Crippled Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls.
She was born June 25, 1894, at Kingsley, Iowa, to John C. and Nora C. Steele. After graduation from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, she taught school for many years, retiring in 1957.
In May 1922 she married John Apland. They were in the ranching and dairy business and purchased the Apland ranch five miles west of Belle Fourche in 1941.
Her husband died in 1954, and she continued with the ranching business and her teaching until her retirement.
She was a member of the Congregational Church and the American Legion Auxiliary for many years. She had resided at the care center since 1977.
Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Apland of Tucson, Ariz., John "Jack" Apland and Lawrence "Larry" Apland, both of Belle Fourche, and Ralph Apland of Spearfish and Oregon; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Vroman, in 1986; a brother, Lawrence Steele; and two sisters, Isabelle Willert and Eleanore Snyder.
