An otherwise long and fine baseball career should not be defined by what was really not a baserunning "error", but a common baserunning response typical of those times. Mr. Merkle, you deserved better, and belatedly but fortunately, we can all see that now.

RIP Just bought one of your baseball cards. You were a really good player. One play never loses a game, it's a team sport.

God bless, Mr. Merkle. Your Giants just might make it to the World Series and win this year. I bet you're smiling.

Rest in peace, Fred. Your career far overshadows one mishap. You made it to the bigs and held your own. Hope you're on some heavenly team playing in the pearly gates (or is that in Iowa?).

Happy birthday Fred. Rest well. You once said your tombstone would say "Here lies Bonehead Merkle" but you have been saved that fate.

The scholarly baseball fans who have already left notes here know the truth. Fred Merkle did not make an "error" as this biography claims. He committed a minor baserunning gaffe that was very common in his era when a game-winning hit was made. It's a shame that one play sullied an otherwsie fine career.
