John Adams Berry was born in 1825 in Sussex, England to John and Catherine Berry. He was the third of ten children. The family immigrated to USA in 1835 and lived in Elizabethtown, NJ. They moved to Richmond, VA and then on to Detroit, Michigan where they made their home. John along with his brothers Joseph and Thomas started the Berry Brothers Paint and Varnish Company.
He married Harriet Sublett Read in Richmond, Va on 6 Nov 1854. They had the following children: Henry G., Harriet R., George and Charles B. Harriet died 6 Mar 1871 and John married her sister Emma Sophia Read on 22 Oct 1872. John and Emma had the following children: Jessie A., Frances M., John F. and Mary Emma.
