22-year old Ensign H. D. Campbell, USNR, drowned, along with one marine and six sailors all assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVB-41), off the France port city of Les Salins d'Hyeres when their liberty launch capsized at night when it was returning to the carrier.

Ensign Campbell was the son of Harry V. and Leah V. (Small) Campbell, former Franklin residents, but residents of Cleveland, Ohio in 1948.

Ensign Campbell, a graduate of Yale and MIT was an excellant swimmer and refused to leave the water until others could be rescued. His body was discovered March 19th and his burial took place on May 28th.

The newspaper account states Ensign Campbell had been recommended for the Silver Life-Saving Medal.
