Mozel was the daughter of James and Martha Screws. She and her first husband, T. Joseph Smith, had three children: Annie Bell Smith Paul, Wiley W. Smith, and Mozel Viola Smith Portwood Hutchinson. After Joe's death she married J.J. Bush. She raised her oldest grandson, William F. Brown.
