James "Horace" Scruggs, 85, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Cleveland County, James served in the Air Force during World War II stationed at Elgin Field, Fla. He retired after 29 years of service with Gardner-Webb University as a maintenance supervisor and continued working with Crawley Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. He was a lifelong member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, and was a member of the Max Linnens Sunday School Class. Dr. Bobby Jones states, "The passing of Horace Scruggs is indeed a sad day. Horace has been the patriarch of the bluegrass community for many decades as was recognized when he received the Heritage Bridge award from the Cleveland County Arts Council in 2006. Horace was the consummate rhythm guitarist and insisted on excellence in one?s playing. More importantly, though, he was a wonderful family man and friend to all. We will miss you, old friend, but know you will be waiting for us on the other side."
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Elam Scruggs and Lula Georgia Ruppe Scruggs; brother, Junie Scruggs; sisters, Eula Mae Jolley and Ruby Vinesett; and infant sister, Bessie Scruggs. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Maida Greene Scruggs; sons, James Hal Scruggs and wife, Noy, of Boiling Springs and Horace Elam Scruggs and wife, Susan, of Boiling Springs; brother, Earl Scruggs of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
