Adrian Cortés, beloved father, friend, and brother from a large family from his hometown in Utuado, Puerto Rico, will ever be remembered for his loving and easy to talk to nature.
He married rather late in life after having served faithfully in the U.S. Army during W.W.II in the Puerto Rican platoons. He was discharged with a rank of Staff Sergeant and returned to his beloved island to assume his vocation of carpenter and vocational school teacher in the town's high school which he was instrumental in building. His parents were Rita Fontanilla and Jose Maria Cortés both directly descended from Spanish immigrants. They brought a large number of children into the world, 17 to be exact, of which most survived to adulthood. My father along with his many brothers and sisters all struggled to educate themselves and he and most of his sisters became teachers.
I remember my father for his lovely singing voice and his gentle, loving disposition with us and all people who knew him. When he emigrated to the United States he set himself to the task of providing the best home for his wife, Virginia Arroyo and his two children, Lydia and Adrian, Jr. He was an excellent provider of earthly things working long hours and seeing to all our needs.
More than the worldly things, however, he was available for his wife and children to talk to even when his work schedule kept him from us. I remember him most for having been my biggest encouragement in school and my tutor on many occasions. His confidence in me helped me achieve two college degrees and travels to many distant lands. His example as a loyal and loving father gave me the basis to marry a good man whom I've been married to for almost forty years.
He strongly believed, as did his father, that all brothers and sisters come into this world to help one another, setting aside selfish ambitions when a brother or friend is in need of help or an encouraging word. May all men follow this bright example.
