Martha "Kathryn" Cowley Hagar, 80, entered the kingdom of Heaven on Feb. 5, 2001. She was born on March 15, 1920, in Mt. Pleasant, Tx., to Dutch and Donnie Cowley. She moved with her family to the West Texas community of Forsan where her father worked in the oil industry. Kathryn graduated from Forsan High School in 1937 and married Jimmy Hagar, a salesman for Safeway Grocery, on Feb. 11, 1939. In 1940, they moved to Pecos, where they raised their three daughters and owned and operated the Hagar Brothers and Nik-Nak Grocery Stores. They were active members of the First Baptist Church and civic organizations. In 1982, Kathryn moved to San Angelo where she lived for many years at the Christian Village Retirement Center, where she worked at the hospitality desk until September of 2000. The legacy Kathryn passes to her daughters, grandchildren and extended family is abiding faith in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior; loving devotion to family; and integrity. Some people only read about heroes, we got to call ours "mother."

Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband Jimmy, her parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Bob Cowley, her nephew Bobby Cowley and son-in-law Don Sanders.

She is survived by her three daughters, Donna Hagar Sanders of San Angelo, Martha Sue "Suzy" Hagar of Dallas and Jimmy Ann Hagar Thompson of Grapevine; her husband, Todd Thompson; four grandchildren, Ron Sanders, Jim Sanders, Jeff Sanders and Avery Hagar Thompson; three grand daughters-in-law, Juli Sanders, Dawn Sanders and Donna J. Sanders; five great grandchildren, Austin Sanders, Emily Kathryn Sanders, Gatlin Bates, Suzannah Sanders and Grant Sanders; sisters-in-law, Betty Cowley, Evelyn Cowley and Helen Hagar; nieces and nephew, Martha Ann Williams, Brenda Cowley and Steve Cowley and many dear friends.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff on the third floor of the San Angelo Community Hospital for their devotion to caring for their patients, her supportive pastor Brother Jim Wilkerson, Jr., and loving church family of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Services were at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 6, at Johnson's Funeral Home, 435 W. Beaureguard, San Angelo. Interment is at Fairview Cemetery in Pecos, at 4:30 p.m. ~~ provided by: Reynolds Ansley
