Joseph Dec, 80, who conducted research on chemical warfare for the US government during WW II, died April 29, 1993 at the Raritan Health and Extended Care Center.
Before he joined the government Mr. Dec worked from 1940-1943 in the research divison of the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester NY. His research led to commercial production of pantopaque the first compound suitable for X-raying fluid in the spinal cord.
Mr.Dec joined the research and development division of JohnsManville Corp in Manville in 1946. He was a senior scientist when he retired in 1975.
Mr. Dec was a member of the American Chemical Society for 55 years. He was an avid golfer at the Raritan Valley Country Club. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild as well as other cultural and civic organizations.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy Huyck Dec, a sister, Stephanie Mollo in Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held at Kirkpatrick Chapel Rutgers University on May 21, 1993. Mr. Dec's was placed in Somerset Hill Memorial Park Jan 9, 2008.
