William was the eldest of ten children of
P. Jacob Shoudt and Wilhelmina Shafer Shoudt.

He married Ella A. Whitman about 1883. She was often called Ellen. William's brother Charles later married Ella's sister Annie.

William and Ellen had six children: Emma Nora in 1883, Annie L. in 1886, Mary E. in 1889, Elmer in 1891, Carrie May in 1897 and Lillian in 1900. Their daughter Annie died aged six years.

He was a farmer, and he lived in Upper Black Eddy (Bridgeton Twp.) all his life.

The cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver.

William had six known grandchildren and nine additional known descendants as of early 2009.
