Pioneer Baseball Player. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a right handed pitcher in baseball's amateur era and is considered by historians to be the game's first super star. He changed the sport from a game that showcased fielding, into a confrontation between the pitcher and batter. From 1860 to 1862, he played for the Excelsior Club of Brooklyn and was at the height of his popularity. On October 14, 1862, he injured himself in a match against the Union of Morrisania, when he suffered a ruptured abdominal hernia hitting a homerun. He died of internal bleeding at age 21 four days later. Such was the grief by the baseball community by his death, that a 12-foot marble obelisk, topped with a large baseball, was erected at his grave site.
