Monty Laird was a believer in Jesus Christ who took seriously his discipleship. He grew up in Clemmons, North Carolina but was very active in the home church of his mother. He made a commitment to Jesus Christ as a member of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship while a student at North Carolina State University. Following graduation he worked for NASA in Virginia. He left the promise of an exciting career to give his life in service to Jesus Christ as a Mission Pilot. He was in the process of moving back to North Carolina to attend Bible School when his life was cut so short.
He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist church. As a college student was involved with smuggling Bibles in the eastern block of the Soviet Union.
