October 2, 1929 - June 6, 2011

Hugh B. Akers, Jr., 81, of Panama City, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at a local hospital. Mr. Akers was born in Decatur, AL, and had lived in Bay County for the last 40 years. He retired as fire inspector and Chief of Fire Rescue in the US Air Force after over 26 years service, serving during Korea and Viet Nam. Mr. Akers was a true patriot, an excellent cook, and a competitive bridge player. He enjoyed working with the youth of Bay County as a high school and college umpire. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Panama City.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Akers, his son, Benjamin Akers, and a daughter, Lea Akers.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Helms Akers of Panama City; his children, Hugh Akers, III (Carol) of Tampa, FL, Howard Akers (Tammy) of Quitman, GA, Denise Johnson (Dane) of Fleetwood, NC and Renee Hudson (Bobby) of Cohutta, GA; his grandchildren Kristen Deel (Scott), Grant Hudson (Kyndall), Brent Hudson (Alissa), Charlie Akers, and Alexandra Kindred; and his great-grandchild, Logan Brady.

A funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Beck officiating and full military honors offered by the US Air Force. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until service time at 3:00.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Panama City, 903 E. 4th St., Panama City, FL 32401.
