Matthew "Matt" Jack was born in Pennsylvania. He came to Streator as a carpenter. He was employed by Overholt and Holmes grocery and general store; later he studied law. He became superintendent of the Streator Bottle and Glass Co. in about 1881. His trade relations with Adolphus Busch, (founder of Anheiser Busch Brewing Co,) led to the success of the glass industry in Streator. When the company became a part of the American Bottle Co., he served as president. It was later sold to Owens-Illinois Glass.

There are seven buried in the mausoleum. They are, in addition to Matthew, Ella (Jennings) 1856-1930; Ralph William 1875-1878; infant daughter 1877-1877; Lewis Clark 1880-1921; Chester 1889-1963; and Mildred P 1890-1968. Legend has it that Mr. Jack's will provided money to have floral bouquets continously hung on the mausoleum door.
