He was the youngest of five children born to Samuel Carey and Nancy Stewart Carey in district 5 of rural Davidson County, Tennessee. His father died around the time of his birth. He spent part of his life trying various careers in Detroit, Michigan but his family and roots kept returning back to Tennessee.
