General Terry, your service during the Civil War as an Officer of the Union Army was so distinguished that you were awarded the rank of Brigadier General in the Regular Army. A singular achievement for a non-professional officer of the volunteers. Despite your desire to return to civilian life after the war, you were prevailed upon to accept the regular Army appointment as Brigadier General, and you agreed. You served in the postwar Army until 1888 when you retired as a Major General. Thank you for your truly distinguished service in war and peace.

I have two ancestors (Confederate) who were at Fort Fisher. Despite that fact, you earn my respect for the text book capture of that place and the humane treatment you gave the prisoners. I salute you General.

Dear General,

If it's possible up there, I would sure like to be hearing some of the conversations between you, Custer, and Marcus Reno. Oh well, maybe someday I will.

Rest in Peace, sir.

General Terry was a lot more than Custer's commanding officer. He fine Civil War record cannot be overlooked; especially the capture of Ft. Fisher.
