Mr. Dunbar, you are still one the most famous African American poets and one of the most famous American poets of all time. You remain a key figure in the African American literary tradition not only because you were one of the first black authors to create a sensation on the mainstream American liteary scene, but also because your writing-even in dialect-contains powerful naunces that still move readers. Happy Birthday!

Once riding in old Baltimore, heart-filled, head-filled with glee, I spied a Baltimorian kept looking straight at me... now I was only 8 years old, and he was no wit bigger, and so I smiled, but he stuck out his tongue and called me nigger! We saw the whole of Baltimore from May untill December, but out of everything I saw, that's all that I remember.
Your sad words are stuck in my mind.
God rest your soul.
