Dennis Hendry had a drinking problem. We all knew it. I'm fairly certain it was a factor in his being relieved from the drill field. But in spite of his drinking problem, he was rock solid when it came to taking care of his men.

When I first came to know Staff Sergeant Dennis Hendry in the Fall of 1981, I had been in trouble in the Corps, and Dennis knew that I had made a mistake and paid dearly for it – and he also knew that I was a good Marine and a good NCO and that I shouldn't be punished forevermore. So Ssgt Hendry took me under his wing and made me feel like a part of the team. To say that I deeply appreciated it would be a gross understatement.

I don't know much about Dennis' past, but I knew that he was a loyal friend that had your back through thick and thin.

He lived hard, played hard, drank too much, and in the end paid the ultimate DUI penalty by wrapping his car around a tree.

Of all the characters I met in my seven years in the Corps, Dennis Hendry was completely unique. They broke the mold when they made him.

Semper Fi Staff Sergeant Hendry. I salute you Marine!
