Marjorie Nelle Hill was born September 5, 1928 in Weatherford, Texas to Wyley Wilburn "Jack" Hill and LaVerne Barnett Hill. She had one older brother, Robert Chandler Hill. Her parents divorced when she was a baby, and she was raised in her mother's extended family, consisting of her grandparents George Johnson Barnett and Lee Myrtle McNutt Barnett, and her two aunts, Dymple and Olene Barnett. The family moved to Huntsville, Texas, where her mother attended Sam Houston State College. Later they moved to Floresville, then Kenedy, and finally settled in Karnes City, where she graduated from high school. She returned to Huntsville to attend her mother's alma mater, Sam Houston State College, where she received a bachelor's degree in English, with a minor in French. She taught in the small town of Pattison, Texas, before moving back to Karnes City. She married John William Ruckman on June 19, 1953 and they made their home in San Antonio. They had one daughter, Kathryn Hampton "Kate" Ruckman, and moved back to Karnes City. She taught Language Arts at Karnes City Junior High School for 5 years. John died in 1974 and she married William Edward "Bill" Bailey in 1977. They lived in Karnes City for several years where they owned and operated a liquor store. Later they moved to Austin where they opened a full service gas station and garage. After a few years, they closed the gas station and opened a sign shop and a typing service. They moved their residence to the country, near Garfield, Texas, where they continued to live after their retirement. Marjorie became ill with dementia and kidney disease and moved to San Antonio to be closer to her daughter in 2005, and died there in 2006. She was buried in the Karnes City Cemetery.
