Henry Z. Curtis, son of Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge, Maj Gen Samuel Curtis, was a major in the Cavalry and was massacred at the Battle of Baxter Springs, Missouri by Quantrills forces. Curtis, along with 78 other soldiers and musicians were captured and shot in the back of the head.
His funeral in Keokuk,Iowa was one of the most impressive ever conducted with businesses shut down and streets to the cemetery lined with people both civilian and military.
