ROCKFORD - Charles Eugene Barber, 79, of Rockford, died at 8:53 p.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2002 in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Born June 25, 1923 in Mattoon, IL., son of Frank and Gertrude Roberts Barber. Lived the past 34 years in Rockford. Graduated from Neoga, IL High School and attended Bradley University. Married Leona Wente in Neoga on June 5, 1948. Employed for 30 years by Illinois Bell Telephone Co., retiring in 1978 as District Engineering Manager. He has also always been involved with the family farm which was an important part if his life. Veteran of US Navy. He was a member of Neoga American Legion, former member of the Elks Club, has been involved with Junior Achievement and was a volunteer at St. Anne Center.
Survivors include his wife, Leona; daughters, Marsha Barber, Denver, CO, Paula (Fritz) Boll, Libertyville, IL, Carla (Chuck) Atwood, Kansas City, MO and Laura (Robb) Fraley, St. Louis, MO; son, David (Kelly) Barber, Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Eric, Kurtis, Alison, Keagan, Steven, Bryant, Devin, Kelsey, Brendon and Katherine; sister Beverly (Stan) Weber, Dixon, IL, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded by his parents and brother, Gail Barber.
A Memorial Mass was conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation was from 1 p.m. until time of the service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association Memorial Program, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.
