You died leading from the front. Thank you for your service to the Union. You were truly an American hero. My great-grandfather served in the Union Navy on the USS Mendota. The ship was stationed on the James River just south of Richmond.

Thank you for your courage and unselfish love for our country and state in which you put yourself in harms way and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The fact that you turned down the command of the Army of the Potomac and your submission to George Gordon Meade shows your humility. Rest in Peace valiant man! Thank you again!

Major General John F. Reynolds was a man of great courage and nobility. He died leading troops of the Army of The Potomac on the first day of battle at Gettysburg. Gen. Reynolds was an officer who would have made a great commanding general had he not been killed. I, as a southerner, salute you for your fighting spirit and nobility. Rest now and be at peace.
