Harold Chauncey Eaton was born April 22, 1881, at Second and Spring Streets in downtown Los Angeles, California, the second of six children born to Fred Eaton and Helen Lucretia Burdick. He married Lallah Blair Holmes on July 20, 1904, in Santa Monica. They were later divorced. One son was born to this union, Harold Holmes Eaton on October 29, 1907. Harold's second marriage was to Grace Isabel Scott on December 16, 1918, in Garvanza. They were also later divorced. They had one son, John Harold Eaton, born May 31, 1920. Two more marriages also ended in divorce. They were to Leotta Garman, after 1930, and Marie A. Thiers, July 30, 1945, in Minden, Nevada. Harold was a graduate of Stanford University and was active in Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He had been a member of the Waucoba Masoic Lodge in Big Pine, later demiting to the Independence Lodge. He was also a Shriner. Harold's vast holdings in the Owens Valley had included the famed Eaton ranch south of Big Pine where he and his father operated what was then the world's largest chicken ranch. They came to the valley about 1905, purchasing the ranch that was later leased by Howard Smith. Their holdings also included much of the land in Long Valley, including the present site of Lake Crowley. Harold later sold much of the land to individuals in this area, but still had small holdings there at the time of his death. Harold died November 10, 1949, in Santa Monica at the age of 68. He had been living at the Merritt Jones Hotel in the Southland for the past 18 months after discovering that the beach climate gave him relief from an asthmatic condition. He died at a Santa Monica Hospital after a four-day illness due to a heart ailment. His only son, John H. Eaton, who was a student at Harvard University Medical School, was called to the Southland when his father was stricken. Masonic funeral rites were held at the Blake Funeral Chapel in Bishop with Inyo Lodge No. 221, F. and A.M. of Independence in charge. Wilfred Partridge, past master of Winnedumah Lodge No. 287, served as worshipful master for the services in Bishop. Members of the Masonic order assisted and were pallbearers. Burial was in the Big Pine Cemetery beside his son Harold Jr., who died in 1938. ("Final Rites Held for Harold Eaton, Bridgeport Chronicle, November 16, 1949.)
