Bessie Beats Belcher, 90, a longtime resident of Bickinson, Texas, died Friday, February 18, 2000, in Ft. Worth, Texas. She was born on August 19, 1909, in Lindale, Texas, grew up in Dickinson and graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas. Through mostof her life, Mrs. Belcher was anactive volunteer, serving as aboard member of the GalvestonCounty Chapter of the AmericanRed Cross. She directed theRed Cross Center at Camp WallaceNaval Base in Hitchcock,Texas during World War II. Inlater years, she was active inGalveston County politics andreceived several awards fromthe Galveston County BemocraticParty. She was a memberand active volunteer in theHowell Memorial MethodistChurch and the Bickinson PilotClub. She worked for manyyears for Citizens State Bankbefore retiring and moving toFt. Worth. Mrs. Belcher was preceded indeath by her parents, FredGeorge and Bessie Rice Beats;her brothers, George, Fred, Jackand James Beats and her sisterBoris Beats Seaman.She is survived by a daughterand son-in-law Rae and KeithSloan of Ft. Worth; sons anddaughters-in-law, Ed and AnnBelcher of Santa Rosa Beach,Florida, and Fred and SueBelcher of Houston; grandchildren,Martin Sloan of Austin,Bavid Sloan of Ft. Worth, Lt.Commander Brian Belcher ofSpringfield, Virginia; ShariBelcher Trejo of Santa RosaBeach, Florida; Mark Belcherof Hickory, North Carolina; JackBelcher of Arlington, Virginia;Angela Belcher, Ph.B., of Austinand Eric Belcher of Austin; 15great-grandchildren; brothersand sisters-in-law, Wilson andPhraulene Beats of Bickinson,Wayne and Margaret Beats ofCorpus Christi and sister-in-lawAva Lee (Mrs. James) Beats ofBickinson; 20 nephews andnieces; numerous great nephewsand nieces; other family membersand friends.The family will receive friendson Sunday at the JamesCrowder Funeral Home in Bickinsonfrom 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeralservices will be held at10:00 a.m. on Monday, February21, 2000*, at the First UnitedMethodist Church in Bickinson,Texas with interment in theBickinson Cemetery. The ReverendRon Page will officiate.If desired, memorials may bemade to the Beats Family ScholarshipFund, c/o Guarantee FederalSavings & Loan in Bickinsonor the First UnitedMethodist Church in Dickinson, Texas.
