James McCoy South was the son of James Daniel South and Mary Catherine (Hill) South. James married (1) Silvesta Emily Bell McClum on April 15, 1852 in Clermont County, Ohio and (2) Elizabeth A. Dinch on November 3, 1861 in Clermont County, Ohio. James and Silvesta had 2 children, Mary Elizabeth South (died age 13) and Erastus Oliver South. James and Elizabeth had 6 children, Mary Emma A. South (died age 13), Hazel "Hattie" Mantell (South) Hopkins, Amelia Dessie/Dessey South (died age 6 months), Laurence H. Ernest South, Harley/Harland J.B. South (died age 1 year) and James Clarence South (died age 6). James was a chair manufacturer prior to the Civil War. He enlisted in Company C, 51st Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He was in the battles of Shiloh, Perrysville, Nashville and Murfreesboro before being taken prisoner. He was in a prisoner exchange in 1863 where he returned to the battles of Mission Ridge, Franklin and Nashville. After the war, he reengaged in chair manufacture until 1870. James owned the South House in Zionsville before purchasing the Empire House in Lebanon (1874). In 1878, James purchased a hotel at 17 Virginia Avenue in Indianapolis and called it the South House. In 1890, James purchased the Brunswick Hotel (originally the Remy Hotel built in 1875) on the circle in Indianapolis. While James and his wife lived here, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built (cornerstone in 1889 and completed in 1901). James died in the Brunswick Hotel from complications of grippe and rheumatism of the heart.
