One of only two local legends that I actually cried when I heard of their passing. One being Lewis and the other .... Willie B. I still have yellowed newspaper clippings of some of the best. I do so miss that sweet, southern gentleman's drawl.

Your story of Sherman's assault at Stone Mountain is comical. What a terrific sense of humor. You were taken from us too soon.

Twenty years ago. Hard to believe. Still feel like I lost a really good friend. Some say I sound just like you when I retell your great stories and I take that as a compliment.

In Heaven with "Catfish" in sweet peace, dear Lewis.

This is from one of Lewis' last columns, written about his late mother's habitual parting phrase. Now he lies beside her. "In over 40 years, I never said goodbye to her once that she didn't do two things; kiss me on the cheek and say 'Be sweet.' My mother's words were so simple. Be sweet. But we aren't sweet. We don't honor sweet. We don't even like sweet. Sweet is weak. Respect me or I'll shoot you. Sweet is weak. No. No. Be sweet. Be kind and gentle. Be tolerant. Be forgiving and slow to anger. Be tender and able to cry. Be kind to old people and dogs. Be loving. Share. Don't pout. Don't be so loud. Hold a puppy. Kiss a hand. Put your arms around a frightened child. Make an outstanding play and then don't do the King Tut Butt Strut to point to the inadequacies of the vanquished. Be sweet. The wonders that might do. The wonders that just might do. I can still hear you, Mama."

This time ,13 years ago , Lewis, was a sad, sad, day. I remember it so clearly. At that time , I lived 30 miles from Moreland, Ga. I went to the memorial and your family was there and what a sad time. You brought so much to so many lives and you will live on through all of us. God bless your loved ones.

i had the honor to see Lewis in Monroe, La at a fundraiser for the Ruston School for the blind. My friend was working there and he let me up to the front of the line. And there, right in front of Lewis I said," But Harry, all these people will see me breaking up". Lewis looked at me, and we both starting laughing, but quietly. I had him sign his book for my son in the Marines stationed at Qit-Mo. What he wrote we will treasue forever, He was a true gentleman of the South, but a real Southerner,
