Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Gunner's Mate First Class, U.S. Navy. On January 24, 1916, there was an explosion in the lower decks on board the U.S.S. New York. On his own, Gunner's Mate Smith entered a compartment filled with gases and rescued a shipmate. For extreme courage, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 6, 1916.
