German Politician, Diarist. August Friedrich Kellner was a justice inspector in Germany. As a political organizer for the Social Democratic Party, he campaigned against Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Kellner recorded his observations of the Nazi regime in a secret diary that he titled, "Mein Widerstand," meaning "My Opposition." After the war Kellner became the regional chairman of the Social Democratic Party. In 1968 he gave the diary to his American grandson, Dr. Robert Scott Kellner, to translate into English and bring it to the attention of the public. The Friedrich Kellner diary has been displayed in numerous museums in America and Europe, including the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas. It is the subject of a Canadian documentary, "My Opposition - the Diaries of Friedrich Kellner" (2007). On November 10, 2008, this documentary was screened at the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium at United Nations Headquarters in New York to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
