US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Stuart-Forbes was reportedly born a "noble" in Rugby, England. Because of unknown issues, he had to flee England for the United States. He enlisted into the U.S. Army as Jonathan S. Hiley in New York, NY on January 20, 1872. He was described as 6'0", hazel eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as clerk. On February 15, 1872, Stuart-Forbes reported for duty at Unionville, SC. He was assigned to Company E, 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. Just before Stuart-Forbes departed on the campaign that would lead to his death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn River, he received a letter from his mother. The letter informed him that his reason for fleeing England would soon be resolved. Therefore, he would be able to return home after his enlistment expired in January of 1877. There were no reports that Stuart-Forbes' remains were identified after the battle. Therefore, it was likely that he was buried where his body was found on the battlefield. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
