Shirley Ann Schartz, 73, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at Hays Medical Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Hays to Walter C. and Philomena (Fisher) Ross.

She married Gerald N. Schartz on June 10, 1953, in Hays. He preceded her in death on July 16, 2004.

She was an inspector at Travenol for many years and an accomplished artist.

Survivors include five sons, Gerald E. "Butch" Schartz, Ellis, David L. Schartz and Alan D. Schartz, both of Hays, Stephen E. Schartz, Denver, and Mark A. Schartz, Salina; five daughters, Jeanine M. Martinez, Denver, Karen A. Stadelman, Perryton, Texas, Laura K. Schartz, Ellis, Debra L. Douglas, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Marilyn M. "Mernie" Schartz, Hays; a brother, Walter C. "Chuck" Ross, Hays; three sisters, Marilyn Wasinger, Wichita, Jeanine Ross, Hays, and Patricia Needy, St. George, Utah; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard W. Schartz, and a sister, Betty Pfeifer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in church cemetery. Friends can call from 1 p.m. until time of service Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Reed Center in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.
