Actor. Born into one of Canada's wealthiest families in 1896, he had a distinguished film and stage career. He is perhaps best remembered for his roles as the comical "heavy" in "Arsenic and Old Lace," the dreamer in "Things to Come," and as President Abraham Lincoln in "Abe Lincoln In Illinois," a role that was written with him in mind and for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He also played James Dean's father in the 1954 film 'East of Eden'. Later, among his many television roles, he starred as Dr. Gillespie on "Dr. Kildare."
