The ColumbianColumbia, Marion Co., Ms.Aug 06, 1914DEATH OF MRS. WILSONTHE WIFE OF THE PRESIDENT DIED ON THURSDAY EVENING AUG 06, AT 5 O'CLOCK Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, wife of the president of the United States, died in Washington, Thursday evening Aug 06, at 5 o'clock. As a mark of respect the Congress adjourned at once. Mrs. Wilson has been sick with Bright's Disease and many other complications due to the strain she was undergoing with her special work of charity among the slums of the city of Washington. She worked independently of the President for the amelioration of the poorer classes in the district of Columbia and her last expressed wish a few hours before she fell into unconsciousness was that she would go away more satisfied if Congress would pass the bill for the improvement of allies, in the city of Washington. Secretary Tumulthy took her last wish to the Congress leaders and immediately the Senate passed the bill and reported it to the house who will pass it also. On being appraised that her last wish would soon be a law, she expressed her satisfaction. She spoke also to Dr. Grayson, the Presidents Physician, and said " promise me that when I am gone, you will take care of my husband." Mrs. Wilson was born in Savannah, Ga., and was married to Mr. Wilson 1885. She was the mother of three daughters, two of them are married and all three of them were at her bedside with the President when the end came. She was 50 years old when she entered the White House, she was in robust health. A landscape gardener and a painter of no mean ability, she took many prizes. She was known as a beautiful woman and was ever ready to help the poor and needy ones. Her domesticate life was attractive and she was a good cook. Mrs. Wilson will be buried at Rome, Ga., the home of her girlhood and where her father and mother are already buried there. Info by Shirley Fortenberry Ramshur.
