The Honorable John Bacon is the great-grandfather of Civil War hero William ("Willie") Kirkland Bacon. Willie was the beloved only son of Congressman William Johnson Bacon of Utica, NY. Adjutant of the 26th regiment of NYS Volunteers, Willie was mortally wounded on the afternoon of December 13, 1862, leading his troops in the Civil War during the First Battle of Fredericksburg. Willie's left leg was nearly shot off by confederate fire and was later amputated that day. He died from the effects of this wound in the early morning of December 16, 1862.
