US Congressman. He attended local schools and the Chestnut Level Academy and worked on his father's farm. After moving to Lancaster and managing several hotels and taverns, he became active in numerous business ventures, including a hotel, a distillery and farms, also serving in local offices including Justice of the Peace. From 1809 to 1811 he served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 1814 Whiteside was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican and served two terms, 1815 to 1819. He did not run for reelection in 1818 and returned to his Lancaster businesses. Whiteside also remained active in local politics, serving as Lancaster County Register of Wills and returning to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1825. Near the end of his life Whiteside became active in the anti-Masonic movement, and was a Delegate to that party's 1829 state convention.
