US Congressman. A native of Maryland, he received an education in the common schools of Allegany County and later moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky to study law. He was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice as an attorney in Shelby County. Sprigg was elected to the Kentucky Legislature to serve terms from 1830 to 1834 and again from 1837 to 1840. He became a member of the Whig Party and was elected to represent Kentucky's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1841 to 1843 and was an unsuccessful candidate in 1842 after he abandoned the Whig Party and ran as an independent. He resumed his law practice for several years until he was elected to the Kentucky Legislature again in 1852. He served in that capacity until his death later that year. His brother, Michael Cresap Sprigg, was a U.S. Congressman from Maryland.
