Alvina "Skeet" Baer, who grew up in Mobridge, had more than her share of trials and tribulations during her lifetime, but she handled it all, always looking on the positive side. She made a joke of her poor health and her errors, inspiring laughter in those around her. Softhearted and funny, she attracted friends, many of them online because she used it for instant messaging with others and she loved to play cards and other games online. Through it, she made friends all over the world.
That was how she met Cindy. They were like sisters or, as Skeet said, "We're two widows struggling to get by with each other's help." They roomed together for more than five years. At Christmastime they made a cookbook to give to family and friends, a collection of favorite things to cook - vegetable soups, pastries, and of course cookies. Skeet loved to cook.
Her sister Sandy says, "I believe if Skeet had not been with Cindy these last five or six years she wouldn't have been with us this long. I was in Florida a year ago for a month and I knew she was in the best place with Cindy."
Other online friends were Danny and his wife Bobbi. Skeet would call him her "Bruvver" when they played cards with Cindy, who was "Mom" and Skeet was "Pup." It was as though they were a family.
Skeet died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at her home in Mulberry, Fla., at the age of 63.
She was born July 8, 1944, in Igloo, S.D., to Alvin and Dorothy Felt and moved to Mobridge when she was 3 years old. She graduated from Mobridge High School with the Class of 1962.
In 1964, Skeet and Denny H. Baer were married. He died in 1972, and Skeet, left with two small children, moved to Lincoln, Neb., where she worked for Bankers Life Insurance. In 1984 she moved back to Mobridge where she had several jobs including driving an overnight mail truck on the Bismarck run, working for South Dakota Department of Transportation, and The Connection.
Later, she moved to Holdrege, Neb., and worked for The Connection again. From there she moved first to Lakeland, Fla., and finally to Mulberry.
In addition to her online activity, Skeet liked to crochet and made more than 20 afghans for family and friends. "On Wednesday nights she would stay up until after midnight and read the Mobridge Tribune," said her sister Sandy, "and then the next morning when I instant messaged her, she would know than I did about the paper."
Survivors include Skeet's sister Sandy (Dennis) Rische of Mobridge; one son, Brian (Dawn) Baer of Lake City, Minn.; one daughter, Beth Baer of Kenyon, Minn.; two grandchildren, Nikki Baer of Rapid City and Brock Baer of Fletcher, N.C.; two step-grandchildren, Donna and Dana Handshaw of Lake City; her roommate Cindy; her special computer friends Danny and his wife Bobbi, and other computer friends from all over.
In addition to her husband Denny, she was preceded in death by her parents.
A service for Skeet was held Friday, Dec. 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge with the Rev. Douglas Westerlund officiating. Lynn Kuehl was organist. Her daughter Beth, her friend Cindy and Danny, her computer friend, read eulogies.
Skeet's body was cremated and the ashes will be buried this coming summer at Selby Memorial Garden beside her husband.
