ANNETTE WHISTLE SLOAS, 74, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Sunday, December 2 at Saint Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 5. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. in the parlor of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with the funeral at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. Internment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Annette was born in Whistleville, Arkansas to Irene Wall Whistle and Clement Hamilton Whistle. She completed her secondary education at the Fassifern School in Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1950 and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1954. At SMU, Annette majored in journalism, was active in her sorority, Delta Gamma, and wrote a ladies' sports column for the school newspaper called The Whistle Toots. Annette married the love of her life and best friend, David Allen Sloas, in June 1954. After living in southern Missouri for the first six years of their marriage, they moved to Memphis when David bought the Berclair Animal Hospital in 1960. Annette raised her three children, David, Shana, and Melisse in Memphis, where she was a fixture at little league games, dance recitals, swimming meets and horse shows. After raising her children, Annette made a new home for herself at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. At Emmanuel, Annette was renowned for being a supportive friend, providing meals and her famous carrot cakes to those in need of cheering up. Nothing brought Annette more joy than her three grandchildren, Christopher, Evelyn and Greta. She was predeceased by her parents, Irene and Clement Whistle; and by her sisters, Mavis Kelly and Mildred Edwards; and her brother, Clement Whistle, Jr. She is survived by her husband, David; and her son, David Dale Sloas; daughters, Shana Sloas Walker and Melisse Sloas Baylor; sons-in-law, Richard Strong Walker and Gregory Scott Baylor; and grandchildren, David Christopher Sloas, Evelyn Grace Baylor and Margaret Faith Baylor.
