Ida was born in Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri, the daugher of John S. and Laura Amanda "Amma" Foster Sebree. She was the last born of six children. Shortly after Ida's birth, her mother died of mysterious causes sitting in a chair in the yard of her home. She was taken in and raised by the Robert Stratton family after the death of her father three years later. Ida married Joseph Hays and they settled in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. She and Joe never had any children. Joe passed away only a year before Ida.
