Samuel Leibowitz was a courageous lawyer & judge. It took a lot of strength & moral character to defend nine innocent Black men in the state of Alabama as it was in the 1930s. He received so many death threats that five troopers had to be assigned to protect his life with an additional 150 in reserve in case of the forming of a lynch mob. In later life, he was a very tough but fair judge in Kings County (Brooklyn) New York. Many cases of organized crime were heard in his court & he meted out long sentences to criminal offenders. Once again, his life was in such danger that police had to be posted in his neighborhood (Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn) to protect his life. He had the respect of his community & all who knew him.
