Civil War Union Naval Officer. He was commissioned as a midshipman in 1812 at the age of only nine, and saw service during the War of 1812. He remained in the Navy after the conflict ended and served in the United States Navy up to the Mexican war, where he commanded the USS Boston. Promoted to Captain in 1855, he was the commander of the United States Navy's Home Squadron at the Civil War's outbreak. On April 30, 1861, three days after President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of Southern ports, he blockaded Hampton Roads, Virginia, the first by the Union Navy. Promoted to Commodore in July 1862, he was named commander of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, serving in that post until his death four months later.
