The Baxley News-Banner, Friday, 03-26-1909., Hon. Chas. Banks Dead., Hon. Chas. Banks died at this home in Baxley Tuesday, March 30th. His death was due to a stoke of paralysis., The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church, by Rev. J. A. J. Dumas. The remains were interred at the Midway cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.Mr. Banks served as County School Commissioner of Appling County for several terms. He also held the office of clerk of the town of Baxley for a number of years., Mr. Banks was a confederate veteran. He enlisted in heavy artillery at Fort Sumpter , S.C., in 1861 and served all through the war, and was honorably discharged in in 1865. Mr. Banks wears a "Cross of Honor" as the hero of Fort Sumpter . Charlie Banks then a lad of sixteen from Wilmington, N.C., fired with patriotism and zeal for his country enlisted in the confederate service. During the siege of Fort Sumpter , the flag was cut down. The commanding officer called for volunteers to replace it. Chas. Banks responded, yea, twice and thrice amid the heat of shot and shell he climbed the fort, replaced the colors with cheers from his comrades and admiration of this enemies for which he received a furlough for ten days. Ah! each year their ranks grow thinner - Veterans, weary by the way; Soon life's sun will sink forever On those wearers of the gray. One by one they answer roll call, One by one they pass away - Pass beyound this vale of heartaches Noble wearers of the gray.
