Lemuel Steeples
[Add Flowers]
The boxing world never had the opportunity to find out how good Steeples could be. He grew up in the same Pruitt-Igoe projects as the Spinks brothers and was the national Golden Gloves champion, at 139 pounds, in 1979. The same year, he won the Pan Am title as a light-welterweight. As a member of the U.S. Boxing team, he was killed in a plane crash near Warsaw, Poland, in 1980. He was 23.

I just caught a couple of your fights on YouTube, and I must say that you were a gifted and talented fighter. The pro ranks would have been in deep trouble.

Lemuel, I'm sorry that you and your boxing friends were taken from us so tragically. May you all rest in Peace in Heaven.

A River of Tears, teardrop by lonely teardrop, can never wash away the pain and sorrow of the loss of Lemuel and the members of the 1980 USA Boxing Team, but we can remember until the Last Bell rings.

Lemuel, I have never seen any of your fights, but I have heard so many wonderful stories about you. I used to box at Matthews-Dickey Boys Club as a child. During my time there, I saw so many pictures of you. For years, I have been trying to see if there were any tapes available covering many of your fights. Rest in peace. From time to time, I will come and visit your grave.

I want you to know that I think of you often. I too was a member of the USA Boxing Team competing in Europe in 1980. I traveled in the Scandanavian tour. I want you to know that I feel for you because I know that you could have become one of Boxing's Great fighter if this tragedy did not happen. But only GOD knows the reason for all things. I pray for your family, for their well being and I say to you my brother... Rest In Peace, Rest In Peace. I shall never forget you and the others that were with you. I always remember the innocent sacrifice you did for us. Rest In Peace Brothers and Know that you are not forgotten!!!... Your Brother in Sport, Michael...
