At the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, a shell fragment struck his left leg three inches above the ankle, although his service records do not reflect that. That is likely because the fragment ripped his pants but left no scar for future surgeons to find. Other accounts claim a shell fragment struck the stock of his rifle and drove it into his leg, badly bruising it. He also claimed to have lost the hearing in his left ear at the battle of Chancellorsville, which is feasible given that the regiment was supporting an artillery battery. He was honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
He married Nancy Elizabeth Sheaffer August 13, 1871, in Bendersville, Adams County, and fathered Minnie (b. 01/22/72, d. 05/04/73), Harvey Sylvester (b. 10/05/72), Samuel C. (b. 03/04/77), William E. (b. 01/09/79), Christian W. (b. 02/28/82), Hettie J. (b. 04/19/85), and Emma E. (b. 02/26/89). He died in Franklin Township, York County, of "senile gangrene with "hypertrophy of heart" a contributing factor. Nancy died June 25, 1935.
