Lennie was the son of Johnathan "John" M.C. Nicely and Sarah Jane Harnest or Harness. He was one of seven children. His first wife was Opal Nicely, and they had two children. The marriage ended in divorce. On January 1, 1922, he married his second wife in Charleston, WV. She was Cora Belle Scurlock Arbaugh Nicely (widow of Mr. Arbaugh), and they had one child. Lennie was a coal miner, employed by Johnstown Coal and Coke Co.
