Son of Scottish Presbyterians, Archibald and Mary Richardson. William studied at Queen's Museum, later Liberty Hall, in Charlotte. In 1776, Davie graduated with Honors from Princeton University, then the College of New Jersey. 1782, he married Sarah,the daughter of GENERAL Allen Jones. He served in the House of Commons until 1798. 1786,assisted in establishing Warrenton Academy. 1789, he sponsored legislation to charter the University of North Carolina, the first public university in the United States. 1792 to 1798, he served as Grand Master of the North Carolina Masons.1811, he received the first honorary doctorate to be awarded by the University of North Carolina.
