SP5 JOHN LUMSDEN BARNES

John was born November 24, 1943, into a family with two older sisters. They lived in Urbana, Virginia. When John was about 9, his mom remarried and joined his new step-father who was one of the first doctors in Naples, Florida, before there was even a hospital.

The kids grew up and when John started High School, he went off to boarding school, but quickly decided he wanted to be back in Naples playing sports with his friends. So he came back and was a star basketball player at Naples High School where he graduated in 1962.

He had a basketball scholarship to go to College up North, and even though his family objected, he joined the Army and told his sister, he just could not concentrate on basketball when all of his friends were in Vietnam fighting for our Freedom.

He began his tour of duty in Vietnam on April 28, 1967. In December of 1967, he became ill and was taken to Japan with what was thought to be Malaria. He was soon diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was returned to the States to Walter Reed Hospital for treatment, where he died on January 19, 1968.

John received a National Defense, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign Medals.
