TULIA - Funeral services for Sgt. Alex Joseph Cox, 38, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Curtis House officiating.
Rosary will be recited tonight at 6 p.m. at Wallace Funeral Home.
Sgt. Cox died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio while mobilized in support of Operation Noble Eagle in the war on terrorism in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on this country.
He was born March 9, 1963, in Amarillo and was a 1981 graduate of Tulia High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1982. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., and spent some time in Korea. He then enlisted into the Texas Army National Guard and served with Det 1 HHC 2d Battalion (Mechanized) 142d Infantry, Plainview, as a Scout Platoon team leader. He later transferred to HQ, HHC (-) 2d Battalion (Mechanized) 142d Infantry in Lubbock. He was mobilized with Company C 2d Battalion (Mechanized) 142d Infantry to serve as force protection at Fort Sam Houston.
Sgt. Cox was awarded the following medals during his service as a U.S. Army infantryman: Jump Wings, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, NCO Professional Development Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Texas Faithful Service Medal, (1) Adjutant General´s Individual Award.
Sgt. Cox attended Texas Tech University and graduated from South Plains College in 1989 with an associate´s degree in applied science. He married Shelly Beth House on July 4, 1991. He was a regional sales representative for Personal Optics. He also designed, built and owned his own golf course (Cox´s Acres) in Tulia.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Jordan Beth; his parents, Charles and Inez Cox of Tulia; four brothers, Lance Cox and Eric Cox of Tulia, Val Cox of Corsicana, and Sgt. Thad Cox of Fort Riley, Kan.; and his parents-in-law, A.G. and Ellouise House of Tulia.
A son, Andrew Gwain, died Aug. 15, 1991, and a brother, Gwain Dow Cox, died in 1955.
