John Pleasant Ellis, s. of John "Jacky" Ellis and Nancy V. Langston. b. Sept. 10, 1841 at Coles County, IL. He d. Dec. 17, 1929 at Kenedale, adjacent to the southeastern side of the City of Fort Worth, TX.

John was part of the Ellis family lines that relocated prior to 1860 from northeast Illinois to Ellis and west adjoining Johnson counties south of Fort Worth, TX. During the Civil War, John was a member of Co. E of the 12th Texas Confederate Cavalry.

Following the Civil War, John was thrice married. On Sept. 5, 1865 at Ellis County, TX, John m. 1) Mary Jane Slayback by whom he had one known child, son William. In the June 1870 census of Benton County, in the northwest corner of the State of Arkansas, the widower John P. Ellis and 3 year old son William were residing in the household of his oldest sister, the widow Elizabeth Jane (Ellis) Cartmell, and Elizabeth's two children, the eldest recently married. What prompted this group of extended Ellis family to relocate from south of Fort Worth to northwest Arkansas has never been descerned. Whether John's first wife Mary Jane d. in Texas, Arkansas or somewhere in-between has also not been descerned.

By 1875, John m. 2) Laura Matthews, b. in 1855 and d. in 1894 at Lillian, Johnson County, TX. They had six known children b. at Mansfield, TX: Jennie, Kitty, M.L. (f), A.C. (m), Hattie Mae, and Claude H.

John m. 3) by 1697 the apparent widow Emily C. Rogers, b. Dec. 29, 1844 at North Carolina and d. Apr. 8, 1912 at Mansfield, TX. There were no children of this marriage. According to the June 1900 census, Emily was previously twice married and had given birth to two children, both deceased by June 1900.
