Confederate Military History Vol 15 pg 608. -- "The records show that Joseph D. Sayers, a graduate of the Bastrop Military Institute, Class of 1860. applied on July 30, 1861, for a commission as Adjutant of a Texas Regiment. He stated on August 12, 1861, that for "the past 4 or 5 months" he had been engaged in the Office of the Adjutant General of Texas in preparing troops for service. "By order from Headquarters of Sibley's Brigade dated September 6, 1861, he was appointed, subject to the approval of the President, 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant in the 2nd (5th) Regiment Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, having enlisted as a private in the regiment August 29, 1861. "Captain Joseph D. Sayers' Company Texas Light Artillery, (12th Field Battery) was organized April 1, 1862, and he was promoted Captain thereof April 25, 1862. While in command of the Battery he was wounded in the ankle April 13, 1863, in the battle of Fort Bisland, Louisana." "On September 15, 1863, being unfit for field service, he was transferred to the Adjutant General's Department as Captain by order of General Smith and assigned to duty with General Thomas Green." "He was promoted to Major and Adjutant General by General Taylor April 8, 1864, and was wounded at the battle of Mansfield same day."

From Who's Who in the World, 1912Joseph Draper Sayers was born Sept. 23, 1841 at Grenada, Miss., son of David and Mary (Peete) Sayers, immigrated to Bastrop Co. Texas in Dec. 1851; was educated at Bastrop Military Institute; was a lawyer by profession.
