JONES, Smith Petitt Jr. - Peacefully passed away at his home in Santa Rosa on April 2, 2007. "Smitty" was 86 years old and lived his entire life in Sonoma County, other than the 4 years he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 through 1945. He served rescuing downed pilots in the bay near Hamilton Air Field and St. Petersburg, Florida during World War II. He was born in Healdsburg to Smith Petitt Jones, Sr. and Eulalia Gilmer. He attended Roseland Elementary, Humboldt Junior High, and Santa Rosa High Schools. Smitty learned the shoe repair trade at Carner Brothers on 4th Street and worked at Tate's Shoe Repair for $1.00 an hour after the war. On October 2, 1943 he married Florence Silvas in Carson City, Nevada who preceded him in death in 1997. He bought Tate's Shoe repair shop in Santa Rosa in 1951 after Mr. Tate died and operated the shop until he retired in 1972. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman and spent all available time with relatives and close friends pursuing those interests. He is survived by many family members, friends, and close neighbors. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 1402 University Ave., Healdsburg, on Monday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception afterwards. At 3:00 p.m. Smitty's and Florence's remains will be laid to rest at Santa Rosa Memorial Park 1900 Franklin Avenue, Santa Rosa, by the American Legion Colorguard.
